Q. Where did you get your inspiration from?
A. The Quitober Challenge was inspired by the organisers of such events as Movember, Dryjuly and Febfast challenge months and by the quit smoking challenge events run in Canada by their Cancer Society. We have combined the marketing smarts of a quirky named month that calls employers & smokers to action during May. The quit smoking events in Ontario & Quebec Canada had a combined number of over 46,000 smokers participate this year and have been running for over 5 years.
Q. Is this event open up to anyone that smokes?
A. The Quitober Challenge is open to any smoker that is sponsored by his or her employer. Businesses or organisation can register to sponsor their staff smokers to quit for the Quitober Challenge.
Q. How do you know that a sponsored member has successfully quit for Quitober Challenge?
A. We have a number of ways of ensuring sponsored smokers don't cheat.
All sponsored members receive a Quitober Pack containing a wristband.
members wear the wristband throughout the campaign. If the member resumes smoking they are required to remove the wristband.
Winners of the incentive prizes will be listed on the website.
Q. What does it cost employers? A. If employers have registered to sponsor their staff smokers i will cost them $50 per staff member. We invoice employers before the start of Quitober for all of their registered staff smoker.
Q. What does the employer sponsor get for their sponsorship? A. The employer gets their staff to quit smoking for Quitober and is participating in an endorsed Safe Work Australia Week campaign where we organise:
Online registration for organisations and their staff smokers
Employers get a list of all participating staff members.
Q. What is the Quitober wristband for?
A. The Quitober wristband comes in the Quitober Pack and is worn by Quitober members for the duration of the Quitober Challenge or up tilll they resume smoking again. The wristband is to remind them that they are quitting smoking and to signify to others that they should not be enticed out for a smoke.
Q. Does Quit endorse this initiative?
A. The Quitober Challenge was created as a positive adjunct to Quit's negative TV ad campaigns. Unfortunately they were not interested in supporting this campaign so we are running it independently.
Q. Do we endorse Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)?
A. Some 70% of ex-smokers quit unassisted. We remain independent of any organisations including chemists and any pharmaceutical companies that sell NRT products. We do not take any funding from them so as to remain impartial. We are aware that pharmaceutical companies fund just about all research by various organisations on NRT which has tended to skew the results. (see "Unassisted Cessation Neglect" )
We realise that certain smokers will want to use NRT as part of their quit attempt and we neither encourage or discourage it. As John Lennon said, "What ever gets you through the night, is alright"
